It’s happening folks, !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! is giving a seminar at Monterey, CA on potential future collectibles and the Miata is one of the target points, saying’s it’s the next possible Bugeye. I imagine the NBs are still too-new to reach collector status just yet but first-gens are certainly there! If anything, the collectible Miatas will be the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , rare color combos like the Laguna Blue and tan interior (less than 1k produced between ‘94 and ‘95), and original-condition first-year low VIN numbers like !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

Here’s some thoughts for those wanting to play with the potential future Miata bubble.

Collect hard-to-find parts that’re known to break/tear easily. Rear finish panels (will shatter if you look at them the wrong way), front turn signal lens, R package chin spoilers (known to break from speed-bumps and other obstacles), hardtops in rare colors, boot covers, etc. Collectors may be looking for those to help restore their Miata to NOS-original condition.

Holy hell if you can score JDM Mazdaspeed accessories like the famously rare !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! or !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

Discontinued aftermarket parts like Pit Crew Racing’s vintage nose swap and Artwork Dewa’s (RIP, Ryoichi Dewa, you and your awesome style will be missed) custom gauges could go up in value.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

If you want an old NA Miata in the near future, then you better get on it soon because prices will eventually go up and availability might shrink as collectors try to scoop all the good ones up at low prices.

Keep up the roadster life, fellow Miata owners!

I may buy another NA but I fear it will be a track rat and not collectible.

Track rat is not a bad fate for a Miata! As long as it’s not some rare car and is just a worn-out car ready for a permanent hardtop, rollbar, and a stripped-out interior.

I wonder what the market’s like for old F Production Miatas...

They’re probably all spec Miatas now.

I’m doubtful, once you go that far it’s probably cheaper to start with another beater Miata. Also, seems like it only takes about 6k$ to get into a fully-prepped and decent-condition F Production Miata!

yea....I don’t think so. they made a million of these things. it will be the future mgb or Datsun 1600. they are great cars but not rare and even so being a rare optioned car like a 93 LE or a sunburst yellow model, its still a mazda Miata so wont hold the value like a top of the market collectible car plus rare options like a 599 6 speed or a cts v wagon or a Pontiac gto judge.

Apples to oranges, dude. You can’t compared a Miata to an expensive Ferrari grand touring car or a rare muscle car package but you can compared it to old British and Japanese roadsters. Also, they may have made a million of those cars but how many are still around in decent condition? They weren’t collector items so a chunk of those cars ended up being daily drivers, track rats, race cars, and/or, of course, getting wrecked/written-off. As I said about the ones worth collecting:

...the collectible Miatas will be the special/limited/M-editions, rare color combos like the Laguna Blue and tan interior, and original-condition first-year low VIN numbers.

mgb drivers can be bought all day long in the 5-10k range. same can be said for Datsun 1600. yes they appreciated but not in any way that makes them valuable or a good investment opportunity. now look at the 599, the 6 speed cars will easily be worth 2-3 times what an f1 car is because they are rare and an awesome top of the line car. same with the judge, the gto was a high production number car but the judge package was not. so those cars will be worth 3-4 times what a normal gto is worth. a sunburst yellow Miata will not be worth 3-4 times what a normal one is because at the end of the day its still a Miata. look at 427 bb corvettes of the c2 variety. all c2’s have appreciated greatly but a 427 car is worth more because its rare and because the base car is an awesome top of the line car from chevy. compare this to a vw beetle. again large production number but still a basic entry level car. if you have a rare vw beetle like a cloth sunroof or rare color it might be worth 15 instead of 10 but at the end of the day its still a beetle....the car needs to be awesome on its own and have rare options.
